PROPER PROCEDURES FOR LH TIMING BELT TENSION
When servicing or replacing a left hand timing belt on 1.8 liter engine, it is imperative that certain procedures and specifications be followed to ensure
durability of the timing belt.
Over tensioning of the timing belt may result in premature failure.

Belt tensioning must only be performed on a COLD engine.

When installing a new belt, rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction three times prior to tensioning of the belt.

Follow the procedures for tensioning as outlined in the Subaru Service Manual.
There are two types of belts being used on 1.8 Liter OHC engines. They can be identified by the marking color used on the belt.
It is important to adhere to the torque specifications in the chart below.
