Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Manual
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable, raise and support vehicle, and remove front wheels.
2.
Remove cotter pins from tie rod end castle nuts and the nuts, then disconnect tie rod ends from steering knuckles.
3.
Remove pinch bolt securing steering shaft universal joint to steering gear.
4.
Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold and lower pipe.
5.
Remove 4 steering gear mounting bolts and withdraw steering gear toward pinion side.
6.
When shaft disengages torque rod universal joint, rotate steering gear toward rear and remove from vehicle.
7.
Reverse procedure to install, torquing steering gear clamp bolts to 48 ft.lbs. and universal joint pinch bolt to 17 ft.lbs.
