Removal/Installation

Removal

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable, remove spare tire (exc. XT Coupe), and on turbocharged models, remove spare tire support.

2.

Disconnect electrical connector to thermo sensor, raise and support vehicle, and remove front wheels.

3.

Remove front exhaust pipe assembly.

4.

Remove cotter pins securing tie rod castle nuts and the castle nuts, then disconnect tie rods from steering knuckles using suitable puller.

5.

Remove jack-up plate and stabilizer bushing clamp from crossmember.

6.

Disconnect fluid lines at center of steering gear, connect suitable extension tubing and discharge fluid by turning steering wheel from lock to lock.

7.

Remove upper and lower bolts securing universal joint to steering gear and intermediate shaft, scribe matching marks between shaft, universal
joint and steering gear, then disconnect joint from steering gear.

8.

Disconnect fluid lines from upper side of steering gear control valve housing.

9.

Disconnect fluid lines from lower side of steering gear control valve housing, disconnecting upper line first.

10.

Remove bolts securing steering gear clamps, then remove steering gear from crossmember.

Installation

1.

Position steering gear on crossmember, install clamps and retaining bolts and torque bolts to 35-52 ft.lbs.

2.

Connect fluid lines to lower port of valve housing and to center ports on gear, connecting upper pipe first, and torque fittings to 7-12 ft.lbs.

3.

Connect fluid lines to upper ports in valve housing, connecting lower pipe first, and torque fittings to 7-14 ft.lbs.

4.

Install steering shaft joint as follows: 

a. Align bolt hole on long end of yoke with notch in steering shaft and push joint onto shaft.
b. Align bolt hole in short end of yoke with notch in steering gear pinion shaft and engager yoke with pinion shaft.
c. Ensure matching marks made during assembly are aligned, install universal yoke retaining bolts, ensuring that both bolts are properly

engaged in shaft notches and torque bolts to 16-19 ft.lbs.

5.

Reverse remaining procedure to complete installation.
