Hill Holder - Clutch Pedal Return Spring Weak

ALL 1985 FWD MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLES WITH HILL HOLDER

SUBJECT:

1985 CLUTCH SWITCH

Should you encounter a 1985 MY FWD manual transmission vehicle with a hill holder in which the clutch pedal does not return to its rest position with
enough force to completely close the clutch switch, a spring is available to assist the pedal return.

Incomplete clutch pedal return could result in an inoperative upshift indicator light or cruise control system.

The spring is available under Part Number 636 021 250 through normal Parts channels.

This spring should be installed according to the following procedure.

1)

Remove the kick panel below the steering column.

2)

Using a 14 mm wrench, remove the nut on the left side of the clutch pedal pivot shaft (See Figure 1).

3)

Remove the two smaller bracket bolts which secure the clutch cable clamp and bracket.

4)

Remove the clutch cable bracket.

5)

Lubricate the inner area of the spring and spring ends with lithium grease.

6)

Install the spring onto the clutch pedal pivot hooking the U-shaped end on the clutch pedal.

7)

Reinstall the clutch cable bracket by starting the 14 mm nut on the clutch pedal pivot shaft.

8)

Hook the straight end of the spring on the clutch cable bracket and swing the bracket downward in order to line up the two 10 mm bolt holes.

9)

Install and torque the two smaller bracket bolts 4.0 - 6.9 ft.lbs. and the 14 mm nut 16.3-27.1 ft.lbs.

10)

Check the clutch pedal to ensure that it returns completely after it is depressed several times.

11)

Check and/or adjust the clutch pedal free-play as recommended in the 1985 Service Manual, Section 4-5, Page 5.

Installation of this spring can be claimed under Warranty using the following Operation Number # 316-121 and Time 0.3 Hrs.

This spring has been installed in production starting September 26, 1984.
