Temperature Mode Button - Spring Replacement

1985 & 1986 4-DR., S/W, AND 1986 3-DR. VEHICLES              DATE             04-29-86

SUBJECT:

TEMPERATURE MODE BUTTON SPRING REPLACEMENT

A modified "Off" button return spring has been installed in production since February 1986, starting with VINS #231708 for 4DR, #440497 for S/W and
#803093 for 3DR.  Vehicles manufactured before these VINS with buttons which do not latch may need the "Off" button spring replaced.

To determine if a new spring is necessary, test the operation of the mode panel buttons with both the engine running and with the engine off.

If the buttons do not latch properly with the engine on or off, replace the mode panel assembly.

If the buttons do not latch only when the engine is running, replace the "Off" button return spring by following these steps:

Remove the mode panel assembly from the vehicle. This procedure is detailed in the Service Manual or Service Bulletin 08-15-86, dated
03-04-86.

Remove the temperature control lever assembly from the mode panel assembly.

Using a "C" clamp and a small piece of wood, clamp the circuit board to the panel assembly as shown in figure 1. Note:

Excessive pressure may damage the circuit board. Clamping is necessary to keep the metal plate in position to avoid the internal levers from
coming apart.

Carefully pry the metal tabs up to allow removal of the valve body. (Note: Valve bodies may have 2 or 4 metal tabs. Both are acceptable). Be
sure the metal plate is held tightly against the mode panel, release the lock and remove the valve body. See figure 2.
