Idle Speed: Testing and Inspection
Idle Speed Test

Idle speed is ECM controlled by means of an idle air control solenoid valve and is not adjustable.  It may be checked by the following procedure.

Before checking idle speed, check the following:

1. Ensure that air filter element is clean, ignition timing is set to specification, spark plugs are in good condition.
2. Ensure vacuum hoses are properly connected and in good condition.
3. Ensure that "CHECK ENGINE" light is "OFF."

IDLE SPEED INSPECTION 

1. Connect a scan tool to measure engine rpm.  As an alternative, connect a secondary pick-up type tachometer to #1 plug wire.

NOTE:  Because the ignition system simultaneously fires #1 and #2 plugs, some tachometers may register twice actual engine speed.

2. Check idle speed unloaded (all accessories "OFF").
3. Check idle speed loaded (A/C "ON" for at least one minute before measurement).

IDLE SPEED (RPM)

No load:

700 ± 100

Loaded (A/C "ON"):

850 ± 100
