Ignition Switch: Service and Repair

1.

On models with airbags, disarm airbag system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.

On all models, disconnect negative battery cable.

3.

Remove lower instrument panel cover, then lower and upper steering column covers.

4.

Disconnect body harness electrical connector.

5.

Remove steering column as follows:
a. Raise and support vehicle.
b. Remove front wheels.
c. Remove steering shaft universal joint.
d. Remove two steering shaft to instrument panel retaining bolts.
e. Pull steering shaft out from toe board.

6.

Cut upper to lower ignition key switch retaining bolt.

7.

Tap cutoff surface of bolt with a hammer and punch, then remove the switch.

8.

Reverse procedure to install noting the following:
a. Tighten ignition key switch retaining bolt until head twists off.
b. Torque steering shaft to instrument panel retaining bolts to 14-22 ft. lbs. Ensure left side of column is tightened together with ground

terminal, and coating plates are properly positioned.

c. Torque universal joint to 15-20 ft. lbs. Tighten long yoke side first.
