Removal/Installation

Removal

1.

Disconnect battery negative cable.

2.

Where applicable, remove spare tire and support.

3.

On all except Legacy, disconnect thermo sensor electrical connector.

4.

On all models, raise and support vehicle.

5.

Remove front wheels.

6.

Remove front exhaust pipe assembly.

7.

Disconnect tie-rod ends from steering knuckles.

8.

Remove jack-up plate and stabilizer bushing clamp from crossmember.

9.

Disconnect fluid lines at center of steering gear. Connect extension tubing and discharge fluid by turning steering wheel from lock to lock.

10.

Remove upper and lower universal joint to steering gear and intermediate shaft retaining bolts. Scribe matching marks between shaft, universal
joint and steering gear, then disconnect joint from steering gear.

11.

Disconnect fluid lines from upper then the lower side of steering gear control valve housing.

12.

Remove steering gear clamp bolts, then the steering gear.

Installation

1.

Position steering gear on crossmember, then install clamps and retaining bolts.

2.

Connect fluid lines to lower port of valve housing and to center ports of gear. Connect the upper line first.

3.

Connect fluid lines to upper ports of valve housing. Connect the lower line first.

4.

Install steering shaft joint as follows:
a. Align bolt hole on long end of yoke with notch in steering shaft and push joint onto shaft.
b. Align bolt hole in short end of yoke with notch in steering gear pinion shaft and engage yoke with pinion shaft.
c. Align matching marks made during removal.
d. Install universal yoke retaining bolts. Ensure both bolts are properly engaged in shaft notches, then torque bolts to specifications.

5.

Reverse remaining procedure to complete installation. Tighten bolts and nuts to specifications.
