Power Steering Pump: Service and Repair

Disassembly

1.

Place pump bracket (with pump installed) in soft jawed vise.

2.

If equipped, disconnect oil pump switch electrical connector, then remove oil pump switch.

3.

Remove valve assembly and spring.

4.

Loosen rear body mounting bolts, then remove pump from bracket.

5.

Place pump in soft jawed vise.

6.

Remove rear body mounting bolts, rear body and gasket.

7.

Remove cartridge assembly, pressure plate and pin from front body as a unit. Cartridge assembly consists of a rotor ten vanes and a cam.

8.

Remove two types of O-rings by hand.

9.

Disassemble front body as follows:
a. Pry off retaining ring from groove of front body at pulley location.
b. Using a hand press, press our drive shaft (on cartridge side) and ball bearing out of driveshaft.
c. Remove oil seal by attaching it to a hooked end plate placed in vise.

Assembly

1.

Apply coat of lithium grease to oil seal, then using seal installer No. 926970000 or equivalent, hand press seal into front body.

2.

Using guide No. 926980000 or equivalent, hand press drive bearing onto shaft.

3.

Install retaining ring on oil seal.

4.

Using guide No. 926980000 or equivalent, press shaft and bearing assembly into front body.

5.

Lock driveshaft using retaining ring, then place front body in vise with pulley side facing down.

6.

Position two O-rings and pressure plate in front body.

7.

Install cartridge as follows:
a. Apply coat of automatic transmission fluid (DEXRON II) to vane.
b. Install cam, rotor and vane, then insert pin into holes in cam and pressure plate. Ensure vane is installed with ``R'' side facing cam.

8.

Install rear body using new gasket, then hand tighten mounting bolts. Ensure pin hole of rear body aligns with pin in pump.

9.

Remove pump from vise.

10.

Place pump bracket in vise, then install pump on bracket.

11.

Torque rear body mounting bolts in a criss-cross pattern to 11-14 ft. lbs.

12.

Torque rear body mounting bolts in a criss-cross pattern to 22-29 ft. lbs.

13.

Position spring and valve assembly in front body.

14.

Install oil pump switch with O-ring, then connect electrical connector, if equipped.
