SUBJECT:
Left Front Wheel Bearing, Squeak/Squeal Type Noise
Introduction
If you encounter a squeaking/squealing type noise coming from the left front wheel bearing area it may be from the lip of the wheel bearing seal
contacting the flange of the wheel bearing housing.
The seals have a spiral manufacturing surface and due to the wheel rotation on the left side, it creates a low pressure causing the lip of the seal to stick to
the flange. When the seal lip sticks, it vibrates creating the noise. Over time the spiral surface will become smooth eliminating the condition. In the
interim, the following procedure should be used to eliminate the noise.
Note:
Do not use any type of grease or any other method to eliminate the noise. Adding grease will only worsen the condition.
Repair Procedure/Service Information
Special Tool
For illustration purposes, the bearing assembly was removed. The actual repair is performed on car. The special tool is inserted to separate the seal lip
from the flange.
(1) Remove the left front wheel.
(2) Remove the brake caliper.
(3) Remove the brake rotor.
