ECU - Stumble/Surge During Acceleration

1988 XT-6 VEHICLES

SUBJECT:

DRIVEABILITY

A confirmed driveability complaint on XT-6 vehicles for one or both of the following conditions can be improved through installation of a ROM (Read
Only Memory) chip in the Engine Electronic Control Unit (ECU).

Prior to installation of the ROM, all mechanical and electronic aspects of the vehicle should be confirmed as operating properly.
1988 XT-6 vehicles produced after VIN 308868 or Electronic Control unit marked with an R symbol or carrying part #22611AA223 are already fitted
with the modified logic.
CONDITIONS

Cold Start - Stumble during moderate to heavy acceleration, especially noticeable when releasing the clutch pedal.

Or

Warm Engine - Surge - during light acceleration.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

1.

Be certain ignition switch is OFF and remove ECU from under the rear package shelf and carefully remove connector harnesses.

2.

Hands must be clean and free of dirt and grease prior to handling ROM.

3.

Remove static charge from your body by momentarily touching an earth ground, such as; a cold water pipe, metal building support beam or clean
metal area of vehicle.

4.

Remove ECU top cover (opposite mounting brackets) using a #2 Phillips screw driver.

5.

Locate the raised circuit board and remove the 4 retaining screws.

6.

Lift the circuit board being careful to avoid damaging the conductor strap.

7.

Locate the ROM socket, which is covered with tape, using the photos as a guide.

8.

Align the notch in the new ROM with the notch in the ROM socket.

Insert the ROM pins into the socket receptacles.  Make sure all pins are aligned.  Apply a steady downward pressure to fully seat the ROM into the
socket.

9.

Using the photo as a guide, locate the tan colored resistor near the newly installed ROM.  Cut the resistor lead near the resistor body.  Spread the
wire ends apart making sure that they are not in contact with any other parts.

NOTE:

Do not apply excessive force or tap the ROM into place.

10.

Reinstall the sub board using the 4 screws previously removed.

11.

Reinstall the ECU cover plate.  To identify a modified ECU, mark the cover plate with an indelible marker.
