Remove pinion and valve from valve housing, if necessary.

Remove rack seal holder snap ring as follows:
a. Attach remover No. 926260000 or equivalent, to snap ring through hole in boot groove on cylinder side of steering body assembly, the lightly

tap tool with hammer to drive snap ring out.

12.

Push rack from valve side of steering body and remove from opposite side.

13.

Remove high pressure seal as follows:
a. Push backup ring and oil seal out by inserting seal remover No. 926330000 or equivalent, from valve side.

Using remover No. 926290000 or equivalent, remove valve assembly dust seal, back up ring, Y-packing and ball bearing from valve housing. Use
side A of remover.

Assembly

1.

Assemble valve assembly as follows:
a. Apply grease to dust seal, back up ring, Y-packing and ball bearing contact areas of valve housing.
b. Using installer No. 926300000 or equivalent, lubricate and press in dust seal.
c. Install Y-packing and back up ring on same installer, the press into valve housing.
d. Using side B of remover No. 926290000 or equivalent, press ball bearing into valve housing.
e. Fill dust seal with grease.
f.

Lubricate surface of guide No. 926310000 or equivalent, the place guide over end of input shaft.

g. Insert pinion and valve assembly into valve housing until lip of pinion oil seal touches valve housing. Completely install pinion and valve

assembly.

h. Lubricate dust cover, then position of input shaft. Push dust cover onto input shaft until it lightly contacts housing shoulder. Clearance between

lip of dust cover and housing shoulder should be 0-.020 inch. Do not use excessive pressure when seating dust cover against housing cover, as
this may cause binding in the steering system.

Assemble rack assembly as follows:
a. Place attachment tool No. 926200000 in suitable vise, then attach steering gear to tool.

b. Using tools shown in Fig. 26, install oil seal. Oil seal should be installed to near piston.
c. Install backup ring to rack from gear side.
d. Apply grease to rack teeth grooves, sleeve's sliding portion and piston's sealing surface, then insert rack into cylinder side of steering body.
e. Lubricate and attach guide No. 926250000 to part of rack assembly which protrudes beyond cylinder side.
f.

Lubricate inner surface of holder assembly and O-ring, then insert into rack assembly. Install snap ring to secure holder assembly.

g. Attach installer No. 926320000 or equivalent, to cylinder side of rack assembly, then drive backup ring and oil seal into place on steering

body. Push installer until its groove reaches end surface of holder assembly.

Install valve assembly as follows:
a. Attach shim(s) to stepped lip of steering body and pinion housing. Apply sealer (Fuji Bond C: No. 004403004) uniformly to lip side end

surface of pinion housing. Use same number of shims as removed from steering body, valve housing and valve assembly.

b. Pull out rack assembly until it protrudes 3.03 inches beyond housing end face of pinion side.
c. Lubricate pinion gear teeth grooves and ball bearing.
d. Center rack shaft to rack housing. If centered correctly, the distance from rack housing to end face of rack will be 3.03 inches.
e. Position input shaft so that cutout section faces toward sleeve boss.
f.

Push in valve assembly.

g. Center rack assembly as outlined in step d, then gradually torque socket bolts alternately 14-22 ft. lbs.

Apply a suitable lubricant to sliding surface of sleeve and spring seat, then insert sleeve into pinion housing assembly.

5.

Insert spring into sleeve screw, then pack screw with a suitable grease and install.

6.

Install tie rods as follows:
a. Rotate input shaft until rack protrudes approximately 1.57 inch above end surface of gear.
b. Hold rack in this position, then tighten adjusting screw until it bottoms.
c. Install tie rods onto rack.

7.

Adjust rack and pinion backlash as follows:
a. Torque adjusting screw to 3.6 ft. lbs. to seat sleeve against rack, then back off screw 1/2 turn.
b. Turn adjusting screw until turning torque increases greatly, then turn screw back 1/12 (30°).
