1985 THROUGH '88 4 DR. SEDAN, STATION WAGON, 3 DR COUPE, XT AND JUSTY MODELS EXCLUDING CARRYOVER MODELS

SUBJECT:

FRONT SEAT BELT EXTENDERS

Seat belt extenders are now available. These assemblies should be used only when body size or driving position do not allow for proper fit of the factory
installed front lap-shoulder belts.

*CAUTION:

THIS LAP (SHOULDER) BELT EXTENDER IS FOR USE IN THE FRONT SEATING POSITION ONLY AND FOR USE BY PERSONS WHO
CANNOT BE FITTED PROPERLY BY THE STANDARD EQUIPMENT SEAT BELT. USE BY OTHER PERSONS MAY REDUCE THE
SEATBELT EFFECTIVENESS IN AN ACCIDENT AND RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.

When a customer requests information regarding better fitting seat belts:

Inspect the original front lap-shoulder belt assembly to ensure proper function. Refer to section 5-3 of the applicable Subaru Service Manual.

Inform the customer that individuals who can use the standard seatbelt may not receive full restraint system protection when using an extender. See
the caution information above.

Passive restraint models can use the extender for the lap belt only.

Explain the instructions for use listed below to the customer and give the customer a copy of the instructions with each extender purchased.

Listed in the chart below are the seatbelt extenders with the applicable models. They are available in black only and can be ordered through normal parts
channels.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

Be certain to observe the following guidelines when using seat belt extenders:

The extenders are for use only with the front seat belt/shoulder harness combination. EXTENDERS SHOULD NEVER BE USED WITH REAR
SEAT BELTS.

Never use an extender when the belt itself is long enough to permit latch and buckle engagement. USE OF THE EXTENDER WHEN IT IS NOT
NEEDED COULD REDUCE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SEAT BELT AND RESULT IN MORE SERIOUS INJURIES IN A
COLLISION. If removal of heavy clothing is all that is needed to permit the seat belt latch and buckle to engage, REMOVE THE HEAVY
CLOTHING AND DO NOT USE THE EXTENDER.

If the buckle on the extender rests between the pelvic bones, THE EXTENDER SHOULD NOT BE USED. Use of the extender with the buckle
over the abdomen may result in serious abdominal injuries in a collision. It could also reduce the effectiveness of the shoulder portion of the belt.

The seat belt extender should not be used by a pregnant passenger without the approval of her doctor.

Make certain that the extender you purchase is the correct part for your car. Several different types of extenders are available to match front seat
belt designs.
