Oxygen Sensor Replacement Procedure

APPLICABILITY

ALL SUBARU VEHICLES WITH OXYGEN SENSORS, EXCEPT TURBO

SUBJECT:

OXYGEN SENSOR REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

TOOLS AND MATERIALS REQUIRED:

1.

3/8" Drive Ratchet

2.

#499990110 Oxygen Sensor Socket

3.

Spray Penetrant (WD-40, CRC5-56, Kroil, etc.)

4.

Anti-Seize Compound (Never Seize, Jet-Lube #SS-30, etc.)

5.

Thread File

REMOVAL PROCEDURE:

1.

Disconnect oxygen sensor harness and remove exhaust pipe from vehicle, protect hands - high temperature. Before attempting oxygen sensor
removal, allow front exhaust pipe to cool (should be cool to touch).

2.

Spray base of oxygen sensor with penetrating oil, and allow to stand for one (1) minute or more.

Using special tool (#499990110), see figure #1, and 3/8" ratchet, tighten (rotate clockwise) oxygen sensor until you feel the ratchet move slightly.
This will help loosen carbon which may surround the threads that protrude past the threaded inlet of the catalytic converter.

4.

Loosen (rotate counter-clockwise) oxygen sensor approximately 1/8 turn and spray penetrant on base of oxygen sensor once again. It may be
necessary to rotate the oxygen sensor back and forth several times while spraying penetrating oil on base of sensor to completely free it from the
exhaust pipe. Care must be taken to prevent damage to the sensor threads. Should minor thread damage occur, it can be dressed with a thread file.

INSTALLATION:

1.

Liberally coat oxygen sensor threads with anti-seize compound and torque to specifications. 25-34N-m (2.5 to 3.5kg-m 18-25 ft. lbs.). (Do not
allow compound to contact sensor body.)

2.

Re-install exhaust pipe as per instructions in the applicable Subaru Service Manual.

3.

Reconnect oxygen sensor harness.
