AUTOMATIC FREE-WHEELING HUBS - TOWING
The latest edition of the Samurai Owner's Manual states on page 60, under Recreational Towing, that vehicles equipped with automatic free-wheeling
hubs should only be towed from the rear with the rear wheels secured to a towing dolly. Be sure that this instruction is fully understood by all customers.
Failure to follow this instruction could damage the vehicle's drivetrain.
When the transfer lever is shifted into neutral (N) for towing, the front and rear drive shafts are connected through the transfer case. If the vehicle is
towed from the front with the rear wheels on the ground, rotation of the rear drive shaft will also cause the front drive shaft to turn. This, in turn, will
cause the automatic freewheeling hubs to lock. Towing the vehicle with the front hubs locked can result in damage to the transfer case or other drivetrain
components.
Please review the above information with the appropriate personnel in your dealership, and ask them to explain the importance of using proper towing
procedures to customers who equip their Samurai with automatic free-wheeling hubs. Future production of automatic free-wheeling hubs will include a
towing instruction sheet that can be given to the customer.
