REMOVAL

1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Remove timing belt as outlined under TIMING BELT & TENSIONER.
3.
Set key on crankshaft in position shown in Fig. 19, to prevent interference between valve and piston.
4.
Remove cylinder head cover, then distributor assembly.
5.
Lock camshaft as shown in Fig. 20, then remove camshaft timing belt pulleys.
6.
Remove camshaft housing and camshafts from cylinder head.
7.
Remove valve lash adjusters from cylinder head. Do not disassemble hydraulic adjusters. Immerse adjusters in clean engine oil.
INSPECTION
Camshaft Lobe Height & Runout
1.
Using a micrometer, measure cam lobe height. If measured height is below 1.5880 inches for intake cam or 1.5877 inches for exhaust cam, replace
camshaft.
2.
Using dial gauge, measure camshaft runout. If measured runout exceeds .0039 inch, replace camshaft.
