Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Description and Operation
CONTACT COIL AND COMBINATION SWITCH ASSEMBLY
The contact coil assembly consists of three current carrying coils; two for the deployment loop and one for the horn circuit. The contact coil assembly is
combined with the combination switch assembly and mounted together on the steering column, allowing rotation of the steering wheel while maintaining
continuous contact of the driver deployment loop to the driver air bag (inflator) module.
There is a shorting bar on the yellow 2-way connector near the base of the steering column which connects the contact coil to the air bag wire harness.
The shorting bar shorts the circuits to the contact coil and driver air bag (inflator) module when the yellow 2-way connector is disconnected. The circuit
to the driver air bag (inflator) module is shorted in this way to help prevent unwanted deployment of the air bag when servicing the steering column or
other air bag system components.
