Expansion Valve: Testing and Inspection

EXPANSION VALVE 

Inspection Prior to Removal 

1. Connect manifold gauge set to service valves.
2. Run engine at 1000 r/min with A/C switched ON.
3. Check that low pressure gauge shows a reading of 0.5 to 5.0 kg/sq.cm (7 to 71 psi), properly.

If the reading is too low (below 0.5 kg/sq.cm, 7 psi), check expansion valve and/or receiver/dryer, and replace as necessary. 
If the reading is too high (about 5.0 kg/sq.cm, 71 psi), tighten remote bulb holder or replace expansion valve.

Inspection 

1. Connect manifold gauge set to expansion valve and its charging hose to refrigerant container.
2. Soak remote bulb of expansion valve in water contained in a water pan.
3. Previously close both low and high pressure valves.
4. Open refrigerant container valve.
5. Open high pressure valve to adjust pressure to approx. 5 kg/sq.cm (71 psi).
6. Read the pressure indicated on low pressure gauge. At the same time use a thermometer to measure water temperature.
