Steering Wheel: Testing and Inspection
Steering Effort Measurement
Check the steering effort by doing the following.
a. Center the steering wheel.
b. Remove the steering wheel pad.
c. Start the engine and run it at idle.
d. Measure the steering effort in both directions. The reference measurement is 4.9 Nm (43 inch lbs.).
NOTE: Be sure to consider the tire type, pressure and contact surface before making your diagnosis.
e. Tighten the steering wheel set nut to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.).

Install the steering wheel pad.
