Rack & Pinion Manual Steering Gear

Disassembly

1.

Remove steering damper, Fig. 13.

2.

Mount steering gear housing in soft jawed vise taking care not to crush aluminum housing.

3.

Make suitable alignment marks on tie rod and rack ends and remove tie rods.

4.

Remove clips, rack end dust seal, set ring, damper bracket, boot retainer, clamps and rack boots, Fig. 13.

5.

Unstake claw washers.

6.

Mark left and right rack ends, and using service tools 09612-10091 and 09612-24010 or equivalents, remove rack ends. Remove claw washers.

7.

Using service tool 09612-24010 or equivalent, remove locknut and rack guide spring cap.

8.

Remove compression spring, rack guide with spacer and dust cover.

9.

Using service tool 09612-24010 or equivalent, remove locknut and pinion bearing adjusting screw.

10.

Pull rack fully from housing side and align notched portion of rack with pinion. Taking care not to damage serrations, remove pinion and upper
bearing as an assembly.

11.

Remove rack from pinion side without turning it. Removing rack from tube side can result in damage to bushing by rack teeth. 

Inspection & Assembly

1.

Check teeth and back surface of rack for wear or damage. Check that rack runout does not exceed .012 inch(.3 mm).

2.

Inspect pinion bearings, Fig. 13.
