1.

Inspect rack teeth or back for wear or damage, Fig. 18.

2.

Check that rack runout does not exceed .012 inch (.3 mm).

Replace rack housing seal, if necessary: Remove old seal with screwdriver. Install new seal with tools 09620-30010 or equivalents.

4.

If necessary, replace cylinder housing oil seal as follows: 

a. Drive oil seal out with service tool 09620-30010 or equivalent.
b. Install new seal with service tool and hammer.
c. Place spacer on oil seal.
d. Drive oil seal over spacer until round surface of service tool is flush with housing surface.

5.

If necessary, replace lower pinion bearing by driving out with suitable brass drift. Install new bearing.

6.

Replace Teflon ring and O-ring, if necessary, as follows: 

a. Remove Teflon ring and O-ring.
b. Install new O-ring.
c. Place new Teflon ring on tool 09630-24012 and install on steering rack.
d. Apply power steering fluid to Teflon ring and snug ring down with fingers.
e. Carefully slide tapered end of service tool 09630-24012 over Teflon ring to seat ring.

7.

If necessary, replace control valve bearing and oil seal as follows: 

a. Using tools 09620-30010 and 09630-24012 or equivalents, press oil seal and bearing out of control valve housing.
b. Using same tools, press oil seal into control valve housing.
c. Using same tools, press bearing into control valve housing.

8.

If necessary, replace cylinder end stop oil seal as follows: 

a. Tap oil seal from cylinder end stop taking care not to damage inside surface of unit.
b. Using tool 09620-30010 or equivalent, press oil seal into cylinder end stop.

9.

Install spacer, Fig. 18.

Place service tool 09630-24012 over Teflon ring to prevent damage, Fig. 19.

11.

Insert tool 09630-24012 into oil seal of cylinder housing as follows: 

a. Insert one tool into other, Fig. 20.
