Constant Velocity Joint: Service and Repair
Front Drive Axle

Disassembly

    The following procedure applies only to right hand driveshaft on 1982-84 Camry gasoline engine models.

1.

Remove snap ring, boot and dust cover from right hand side driveshaft.

2.

Place matchmarks on driveshaft yoke and joint yoke.

3.

Using two suitable screwdrivers, remove the four snap rings from universal joint.

4.

To disassemble the universal joint spider bearings, proceed as follows: 

a. Using tool No. 09332-25010 or equivalent, remove bearing from universal joint.
b. Position bearing outer race into a suitable vise, then gently tap yoke from joint. Remove the remaining bearing in the same manner.
c. Using tool No. 09332-25010 or equivalent, remove bearing from yoke.
d. Position bearing outer race into a suitable vise, then gently tap yoke from joint. Remove the remaining bearing in the same manner.

Assembly

1.

Lubricate spider and bearings with a suitable grease.

2.

Align matchmarks on the shaft yoke and joint yoke placed during disassembly.

3.

Install spider into yoke.

4.

Using tool No. 09332-25010 or equivalent, install new bearings onto spider. Install bearing on the opposite side in the same manner.

5.

Install both snap rings with the same thickness which will allow a 0-.0020 inch axial clearance. Snap ring thickness and color codes are as follows:

a. .0581-.0600 inch (1.475-1.525 mm), no color code.
b. .0600-.0620 inch (1.525-1.575 mm), color coded brown.
c. .0620-.0640 inch (1.575-1.625 mm), color coded blue.

6.

Using a suitable hammer, tap on yoke until there is no clearance between bearing outer race and snap ring.

7.

Install dust cover and snap ring.
