The Dashpot is used on most fuel injected engines to reduce HC and CO emissions by delaying the closing of the throttle during deceleration. The
system consists of a diaphragm capsule with a stop that contacts the throttle lever and a Vacuum Transmitting Valve (VTV), Figs. 40 through 43. When
the throttle is opened, spring tension extends the diaphragm capsule stop and vacuum within the capsule opens the VTV. When the throttle is released,
the diaphragm stop is pressed in by throttle return spring tension and pressure created by diaphragm action closes the main valve in the VTV. Remaining
diaphragm pressure is discharged through the VTV bleed valve and the throttle closes slowly.

Testing 

1.

Connect tachometer following manufacturer's instructions, run engine until it reaches normal operating temperature, then ensure idle speed is
within specifications.

2.

On models with integral VTV, remove VTV cap filter and separate as equipped.

3.

Maintain engine speed at approximately 2500-3000 RPM.

4.

On models with remote VTV, pinch off vacuum hose between DP capsule and VTV. On models with integral VTV, plug exhaust hole in valve.

5.

Release throttle. DP capsule should hold throttle open and engine should run at 2000 RPM for all engines except 3Y-EC, 4Y-EC, and 4A-GE,
4A-GEC, 4A-GEL and 4A-GELC engines. On 3Y-EC, and 4Y-EC, DP should hold throttle open at 1900 RPM and 1800 RPM for 4A-GE,
4A-GEC, 4A-GEL and 4A-GELC.

6.

If capsule fails to hold throttle open, capsule is defective. If engine RPM is not as specified, adjust DP capsule.

7.

Release pinched hose or remove plug from VTV. If engine does not return to idle within approximately 1 second, or if throttle closing is not
delayed, VTV is defective.

8.

Reinstall VTV filter and cap, if removed.
