Wheel Bearing: Service and Repair
The following procedures apply to front wheel drive models only.
Fig. 7 Rear Axle Hub Replacement
1.
On models equipped with drum brakes, remove brake drum, Fig. 7.
2.
On models equipped with disc brakes, remove brake caliper and position aside using suitable wire, then remove brake rotor.
3.
On all models, using suitable dial indicator, measure bearing play in axial direction, maximum of .0020 inch should be indicated, if not as
indicated, replace bearing.
4.
Using suitable dial indicator, measure deviation at surface of axle hub outside hub bolt, maximum of .0028 inch should be indicated, if not as
indicated, replace axle shaft and bearing.
5.
Remove four rear axle hub attaching bolts, then remove axle hub and O-ring.
6.
On models equipped with anti-lock brakes, do not disassemble rear axle shaft and bearing.
7.
On models less anti-lock brakes, using suitable hammer and chisel, unstake and remove locknut.
8.
On all models, using suitable tool, remove axle shaft from axle hub.
9.
Remove bearing inner race (outside).
10.
Reverse procedure to install.
