(c)  Check that the punch marks A and B are at the positions on the No.1 balance shaft indicated in the illustration.

(d) First turn the crankshaft clockwise. and align the groove of the No.2 balance shaft housing with the punch mark A of the No.1 balance shaft.

(e)  Set the lever type dial guage as shown in the illustration.

HINT:
^  Set the needle of the dial gauge so that it is perpendicular to the core of the No.1 balance shaft and parallel with the gear tooth.
^  So that the dial gauge needle is in the middle of the dial gauge's measurement area, place the dial gauge needle against the middle of the gear

tooth's side surface.

(f)  Turn the No.1 balance shaft four or five times to provide a steady backlash reading.

(g)  Lightly turn the No.1 balance shaft by hand and measure the backlash.

HINT: To prevent excessive backlash due to thrust clearance, measure the backlash while pressing on the rear of the No.1 balance shaft.

Standard backlash: 0 - 0.06 mm (0 - 0.0024 in.) 
On-vehicle Standard backlash: 0.025 - 0.090 mm (0.0010 - 0.0035 in.)

NOTICE: Do not turn the No.1 balance shaft strongly. 

(h)  Remove the dial gauge.
