(b) Turn the balance shaft, and align the groove of the No. 2 balance shaft housing with punch mark D of the No. 2 balance shaft.

(c)  Using a vise grip wrench, hold the No.2 balance shaft.

(d) Set the lever type dial gauge as shown in the illustration.

HINT:
^  Set the needle of the dial gauge so that it is perpendicular to the core of the No.1 balance shaft and parallel with the gear tooth.
^  So that the dial gauge needle is in the middle of the dial gauge's measurement area, place the dial gauge needle against the middle of the

gear tooth's side surface.

(e)  Holding the No.2 balance shaft. turn the No.1 balance shaft and measure the backlash.

HINT: To prevent excessive backlash due to thrust clearance, measure the backlash while pressing on the rears of the No.1 and No.2 balance
shafts. 

Standard backlash: 0.020 - 0.075 mm (0.0008 - 0.0030 in.)

(f)  Remove the dial gauge.
