Air/Fuel Mixture: Adjustments

2VZ-FE ENGINE

1.

The following initial conditions must be preformed prior to checking/adjusting idle mixture:

a. Start and operate engine until normal operating temperature is obtained.
b. Ensure air cleaner is properly installed.
c. Ensure all vacuum lines, air hoses and electrical connectors are properly connected and seated.
d. Ensure all accessories are switched off.
e. Ensure ignition timing is properly adjusted.

Place transmission into Neutral.

Install a suitable tachometer and HC/CO meter onto engine as per manufacturer's instructions.

Check and, if necessary, adjust idle speed.

With engine operating at normal idle speed, check oxygen sensor operation as follows:

a. Using a suitable jumper wire, short check connector terminals TE1 and E1. Check connector is located near the master cylinder assembly and

strut tower.

b. Using a suitable voltmeter, connect positive lead of voltmeter to check connector terminal VF1 and negative lead to check connector terminal

E1.

c. Increase and maintain engine speed at 2500 RPM for 90 seconds.
d. With engine speed at 2500 RPM, count how many times voltmeter needle fluctuates between 0 and 5 volts.
e. Minimum needle fluctuations should be 8 times for every 10 seconds. If not check air induction system.
f.

Maintaining engine speed at 2500 RPM (for approximately 120 seconds), insert HC/CO meter test probe into tail pipe at least 1.3 ft in.
Measure HC/CO concentration. If not to specification, check idle speed and ignition timing and adjust if necessary. Check for vacuum leaks
and a restricted air intake system.
