Suspension Spring ( Coil / Leaf ): Service and Repair
Front
Removal
1.
Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
2.
Disconnect brake line and hose from clamp.
3.
On models equipped with Toyota Electronically Modulated Suspension (TEMS), disconnect TEMS actuator connector from top of shock
absorber, then remove actuator cover and mounting bolts and pull actuator out straight and slowly to prevent binding actuator rod.
4.
On all models, remove three suspension unit attaching nuts from top of fender apron.
5.
Remove bolts attaching strut to steering knuckle, then remove strut. Bolt holes in steering knuckle are provided with positioning collars that
extend about 3/16 in. from arm surface and fit into bolt holes in strut lower end, therefore the lower suspension arm must be pressed downward to
remove shock absorber.
6.
Attach strut stand to lower end of strut, then position holder in a vise.

7.
Using suitable spring compressor, compress coil spring, Fig. 2.
8.
Remove bearing dust cover.

9.
Using a suitable tool to hold upper seat, remove nut at upper end of strut, Fig. 3.
10.
Remove front suspension support and coil spring from strut.
11.
Remove caliper and disc from spindle.
12.
Reverse procedure to install. Torque piston rod to suspension support nut to 29-39 ft. lbs. (400-500 kg-cm). Torque suspension support unit to
body structure attaching nuts as follows: Cressida, 1982-85 Celica and 1982-Early 1986 Supra, 22-32 ft. lbs. (3-4.5 kg-m); Corolla RWD, 11-15
ft. lbs. (1.5-2.2 kg-m); Starlet, 15-21 ft. lbs. (20-29 Nm). Torque strut to knuckle bolts as follows: Cressida, 1982-85 Celica and 1982-Early 1986
Supra, 58-86 ft. lbs. (8-12 kg-m); Corolla RWD, 51-65 ft. lbs. (7-9 kg-m); and Starlet, 56 ft. lbs. (57-76 Nm). Adjust front wheel bearings and
