Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation
1.
Raise and support vehicle, then remove front tire and wheel assemblies.
2.
Remove No. 1 and No. 2 under covers.
3.
Remove steering shaft universal joint attaching bolts, then the joint.
4.
Remove cotter pins and nuts from tie rod ends, then using suitable puller, separate tie rod ends from steering knuckles.
5.
Remove suspension lower crossmember, then the engine center mounting member.
6.
Remove exhaust pipe to manifold attaching nuts, then disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold.
7.
Loosen exhaust pipe clamp bolt, then slide clamp towards the front.
8.
Disconnect pressure and return lines from gear housing.
9.
Remove two rear mount bracket attaching nuts, then the rear bracket.
10.
Remove steering gear attaching bolts and brackets, then the steering gear.
11.
Reverse procedure to install. Torque steering gear housing attaching bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm), rear mount bracket attaching bolts to 43 ft. lbs.
(59 Nm), power steering pressure and return lines to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm), exhaust pipe clamp bolt to 14 ft. lbs. (19 Nm), exhaust manifold nuts to
46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm), engine center mounting member to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm), center lower crossmember attaching bolt to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm), all
other center lower crossmember attaching nuts and bolts to 154 ft. lbs. (208 Nm) and tie rod end attaching nuts to 36 ft. lbs. (49 Nm).
