Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation

1.
Position front wheels facing straight ahead, then using seat belt of the driver's seat, fix steering wheel so that it will not turn.
2.
Scribe matchmarks on universal joint and control valve shaft as shown in Fig. 6.
3.
Loosen bolt on upper side of universal joint, then remove bolt on lower side and disconnect universal joint.
4.
Remove cotter pin and nut at tie rod end, then using pressing tool No. 09611-22012 or equivalent, disconnect tie rod end from knuckle arm.
5.
Using line removal tool No. 09631-22020 or equivalent, disconnect pressure and return lines from gear housing.
6.
On 4WD model, mark propeller shaft flange and intermediate shaft flange for installation alignment, then remove propeller shaft attaching nuts
and bolts, then using tool No. 09325-20010 or equivalent, remove propeller shaft.
7.
On 4WD models, remove RH stabilizer bar bracket, then disconnect stabilizer bar from link.

8.
On 2WD models, slide gear housing to the right side of the vehicle, then pull gear housing out through lefthand lower side of vehicle body, Fig. 7.
Do not damage pressure tubes.
9.
On 4WD models, remove gear housing attaching nuts and bolts, then power steering tube clamp bolt, then position gear housing to RH side, then
remove.

10.
On all models, reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Set gear housing so that it matches dimensions shown in Fig. 8, with gear housing at center point.
b. Align matchmarks on universal joint and control valve shaft.
c. Check steering wheel center point and toe-in.
