Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Inspection and Replacement
NOTE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
1. Inspect the steering rack, doing the following.
a. Using a dial indicator, check the rack for runout and for teeth wear and damage. The maximum runout is 0.30 mm (0.0118 inch).
b. Check the back surface for wear and damage.
2. If necessary, replace the oil seal and the bearing by doing the following.
a. Using the 09950 - 60010 (09951 - 00240), 09950-70010 (09951 -07100) Special Service Tool (SST), press out the oil seal and bearing from
the control valve housing.
b. Coat the new oil seal lip with power steering fluid.
c. Using the 09950 - 60010 (09951 - 00180, 09951 - 00310, 09952 - 06010), 09950 - 70010 (09951 - 07100) SST, press in the oil seal, making
sure you install the oil seal facing the correct direction.
d. Using the 09950 - 60010 (09951 - 00340), 09950 - 70010 (09951 -07100) SST, press in a new bearing.
3. If necessary, replace the oil seal by doing these procedures.
