Wheel Bearing: Testing and Inspection
Rear
1. If the vehicle has rear disc brakes, remove the brake caliper and disc by doing the following.
a. Remove the two brake caliper set bolts.
Installation Hint: Torque to 47 Nm (34 ft. lbs.).
b. Support the brake caliper securely.
c. Remove the disc.
2. If the vehicle has rear drum brakes, remove the brake drum.
3. Check the bearing backlash and axle hub deviation by doing the following.
a. Place a dial indicator near the center of the axle hub and check the backlash in the bearing shaft direction. If the backlash exceeds the
maximum, replace the axle hub with the bearing.
Maximum: 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch).
b. Using a dial indicator, check the deviation at the surface of the axle hub outside the hub bolt. If the deviation exceeds the maximum, replace
the axle hub with bearing.
Maximum: 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch).
