Valve: Testing and Inspection
Valve Clearance Inspection
NOTE: Inspect and adjust the valve clearance when the engine is cold.
1. Remove cylinder head cover.
(a)
Disconnect the 4 high-tension cords from the clamp on the cylinder head cover.
(b) Disconnect the 4 high-tension cords from the spark plugs.
(c)
Disconnect these cables and hoses:
(1) Accelerator cable from throttle body.
(2) Accelerator cable from clamp on intake manifold.
(3) A/T throttle control cable from throttle body.
(4) Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose from air cleaner hose.
(5) PCV hose from intake manifold.
(d) Remove the 2 bolts, and disconnect the cable bracket from the intake manifold.
(e)
Disconnect the engine wire protector from the 2 mounting bolts of the No. 2 timing belt cover in the sequence shown.
(f)
Remove the oil filler cap.
(g) Remove the cylinder head cover.
2. Set No. 1 cylinder to Top Dead Center (TDC)/Compression.
(a)
Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with timing mark "0" of the No. 1 timing belt cover.
(b) Check that the valve lifters on the No. 1 cylinder are loose and valve lifters on the No. 4 are tight.
If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°) and align the marks as above.
3. Inspect valve clearance.
