Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Disassembly and Assembly
Disassembly
NOTE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
1. Using the 09612 - 00012 Special Service Tool (SST), secure the gear assembly in a vise.
2. Remove the two turn pressure tubes by doing the following.
a. Using the 09633 - 00020 SST, remove the tube.
b. Remove the two union seats from the rack housing.
3. Remove the right and left hand tie rod ends and lock nuts after first placing matchmarks on the tie rod end and rack end.
4. Remove the right and left hand clips, rack boots and clamps, taking care to not to damage the boot. After removal, mark the right and left boots.
5. Remove the right and left hand rack ends and claw washers by doing the following.
a. Using a screwdriver and hammer, unstake the washer, taking care to avoid any impact to the steering rack.
b. Using a spanner to hold the steering rack steady, and using the 09922-10010 SST, remove the rack end.
NOTE:

Use the 09922 - 10010 SST in the direction shown in the illustration.

Mark the right and left rack ends.
