Condition

Difficulty in removing rear brake drum for brake inspection.

Cause

This condition may be caused by rust between the axle hub and brake
drum.

Rear Wheel

Correction     

1. Apply Toyota rust penetrant (P/N 00289-1RP00) to the drum and

axle area. (See Figure 1)

2.

After allowing the penetrant to soak, screw two bolts (10 mm with 1.0 mm thread size) into the service holes to unseat the drum from the axle
hub.

Note:

Care should be taken not to damage the threads of service holes by over tightening the bolts.

If the brake drum cannot be removed after completing step 2; gently strike only the shaded area shown in Fig. 1 with a hammer.

Note:

Do not strike any portion other than the indicated shaded area. This may cause damage to the brake drum.

Installation

1.

Remove rust from rear axle shaft and brake drum with sandpaper.

2.

When the rear brake drum is installed, apply a thin coating of high-temperature type grease between rear brake drum and axle shaft.
