Throttle Body: Description and Operation

Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)  4A-FE Engine

The Throttle Body, located on the intake manifold, is a cast aluminum housing that is designed to control the air allowed into the engine.  The throttle
valve consists of a venturi passage and a metal plate (valve) that is connected to the accelerator pedal by means of a cable and is rotated by pressure
applied by the operators foot.  Air induced into the system at the throttle valve contains no fuel mixture, as the fuel is injected by the injectors at the
intake ports.  This allows all air/fuel atomization to take place at the intake valve just before it is drawn into the engine for combustion.

The major advantage to this system is that air/fuel mixture does not have to travel the length of the intake runners, which causes mixture to be lost by
wetting or sticking to the interior walls of the intake manifold.  Thus, carbonizing of the intake runners is reduced and fuel economy is increased by more
efficient atomization.  The Throttle body also houses the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and the Air Valve. The TPS is covered in COMPUTERIZED
