Steering Wheel: Service and Repair

LESS AIRBAG

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable.

2.

Remove trim cover from center of steering wheel.

3.

Place alignment marks on steering wheel and mainshaft for assembly reference.

4.

Remove nut attaching steering wheel to steering shaft.

5.

Using a suitable puller, remove steering wheel. On some models, a steering wheel puller may not be necessary.

6.

Reverse procedure to install.

WITH AIRBAG

1.

Disarm airbag system as outlined under Air Bag(s) Arming and Disarming.

2.

Position front wheels straight ahead.

3.

Remove No. 2 and 3 steering wheel pad covers, then loosen steering wheel pad Torx screws until screw circumference groove catches on screw
case.

4.

Carefully pull steering wheel pad rearward, then disconnect airbag electrical connector. Do not pull airbag wiring harness. Store airbag
assembly with upper surface of pad facing upward.

5.

Disconnect steering wheel electrical connector, then remove set nut.

6.

Place installation alignment marks on steering wheel and main shaft.

7.

Using suitable steering wheel puller, remove steering wheel.

8.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a. If spiral cable was removed, ensure front wheels are straight ahead, the turn spiral cable counterclockwise by hand until becomes harder to turn

cable, then rotate cable clockwise three turn to align red mark, Fig. 8.

b. Torque steering wheel attaching bolt to 26 ft. lbs.
c. Torque steering wheel pad attaching Torx screws to 78 inch lbs.
