Choke Opener: Testing and Inspection
Choke Opener System

CHOKE OPENER SYSTEM TEST:

1. Ensure that engine coolant temperature is below 122° F (50° C), step down on the accelerator pedal to set the automatic choke and start the engine.
2. Disconnect the vacuum hose to the choke opener.

3. Reconnect the vacuum hose and check that the choke linkage does not move.

4. Warm engine to coolant temperature above 122° F (50° C), and stop engine.
5. Disconnect the vacuum hose to the choke opener.
6. While holding the throttle slightly open, push the choke valve closed and hold it closed as you release the throttle valve.
7. Start the engine.  Do not touch the accelerator pedal.
8. Reconnect the vacuum hose and check that the linkage moves.  Ensure that the fast idle cam is released to the third step.

9. Stop engine and disconnect vacuum hose.

10. Using a handheld vacuum pump, check that the diaphragm will hold vacuum.  If the diaphragm leaks, replace the choke opener assembly.

11. If the vacuum source for the choke opener is not correct, check the Thermal Vacuum Switching Valve (TVSV) for proper operation.
12. Reconnect the vacuum hose.
