Wheel Bearing: Service and Repair
Rear

The following procedures apply to front wheel drive models only.

1.

Remove brake drum or rotor and check bearing axial play. Play should not exceed .002 inch.

2.

On models equipped with anit-lock brakes, remove ABS speed sensor.

3.

On models equipped with drum brakes, disconnect brake line from wheel cylinder, Fig. 5

4.

Remove 4 bolts holding axle hub to axle carrier and remove axle hub and rear brake assembly.

Remove O-ring.

6.

Place hub in suitable vise. Using hammer and chisel, loosen stake part of nut and remove nut.

7.

Using axle shaft remover tool No. 09550-20014, push axle shaft off axle hub.

8.

Remove inside portion of bearing inner race.

9.

Using puller tool No. 09950-20014, pull outside portion of bearing inner race from axle shaft.

10.

Remove oil seal.

11.

To replace wheel bearing, place old inner race (outside) on bearing, then using bearing remover tools Nos. 09228-22020 and 09636-20010, press
out bearing.

12.

Apply MP grease around bearing outer race and replacer pipe tool No. 09316-60010 press new bearing into axle hub.

13.

Using countershaft bearing replacer tool No. l09310-35010, or equivalent, drive new oil seal into axle hub.

14.

Apply MP grease to oil seal lip.

15.

Place inside portion of bearing inner race on bearing.

16.

Using installer tool Nos. 09636-20010 and 09228-22020, press inner race with axle hub onto axle shaft.

17.

Torque axle hub nut to specification.
