Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Service and Repair

REPLACEMENT / SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY 

1. PRECAUTION
2. SEPARATE BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL 
3. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
4. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.2 [45186/ 98-75] 
5. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.2 [45186 / 98-75]
6. REMOVE HORN BUTTON ASSY [45130 / 98-75] 
7. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSY [45100 / 98-75] 

SST 0995-50012 (09951-5010, 09952-5010, 09953-5020, 0995-5020)

8. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER LWR

a. Remove the 3 screws and column lower cover.

9. REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY [84306/98-162]

a. Slide the column upper cover.
b. Disconnect the airbag connector and connector from the spiral cable.
c. Release the 3 claws and remove the spiral cable.

10. INSPECT SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY [84306 / 98-1621 ]

a. If the following condition is identified, replace the spiral cable with new one.

Condition:  Scratches or cracks on the connector Cracks, dents or chipping of the spiral cable

11. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD

a. Check that the front wheels are facing straight ahead.

12. INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY [84306/ 98-162]

a. Set the turn signal switch in neutral position.

NOTE:  Make sure of the neutral position since the pin of the turn signal switch may be snapped.

b. Engage the 3 claws and install the spiral cable.

NOTE:  When replacing the spiral cable with new one, remove the lock pin before installing the handle.

c. Connect the airbag connector and connector.
d. Install the steering column lower cover with the 3 screws.

13. CENTER SPIRAL CABLE

a. Check that the ignition switch is OFF.
