b. Place matchmarks on the worm gear valve body shaft and worm gear valve body housing to show neutral position.

5. Install the cross shaft and side cover 

a. Coat a new O-ring with power steering fluid and install it on the side cover. 
b. Assemble the cross shaft to the side cover taking care to fully loosen the cross shaft adjusting screw.
c. Install and push the cross shaft into the gear housing so that the center teeth mesh together.

d. Tighten the 4 bolts to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) in a diagonal pattern.

6. Adjust the total preload by performing the following.

a. Install the 09616 - 00010 SST with a torque wrench on the worm gear valve body shaft.
b. Turn the cross shaft adjusting screw until the preload is within the specification of 0.74 - 10.8 Nm (6.5 - 9.6 inch lbs.).

7. Install a new seal washer.

8. Install the adjusting screw lock nut and tighten the lock nut to  46 Nm (34 ft. lbs.) while holding the cross shaft adjusting screw.
