STEERING WHEEL INSPECTION
1. Check that steering wheel freeplay is correct by performing the following. With the vehicle stopped and tires pointed straight ahead, rock the
steering wheel gently back and forth with light finger pressure. Freeplay should not exceed the maximum measurement of 40 mm (1.57 inch). If
the freeplay exceeds the maximum, adjust it in the following procedure.
2. Adjust the steering gear by performing the following.
a. Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
b. Loosen the adjusting screw lock nut.
c. Turn the cross shaft adjusting screw clockwise to decrease steering wheel freeplay and counterclockwise to increase it.Turn the adjusting screw
in small increments and check the freeplay between each adjustment.
d. Turn the steering wheel half way around in both directions and check that the freeplay is correct and steering is smooth and without rough
spots.
e. Torque the adjusting screw lock nut.
1. Center the steering wheel.
2. Measure steering effort by performing the following procedures.
a. Remove the steering wheel pad.
b. Start the engine and run it at idle.
c. Measure the steering effort in both directions using the measurement of 8.3 Nm (73 inch lbs.) as a reference. If steering effort is excessive,
repair the power steering unit.
NOTE: Be sure to consider the tire type, pressure and contact surface before making your diagnosis.
d. Torque the wheel set nut to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.).
e. Install the steering wheel pad.
