Landcruiser AWD L6-4.5L (1FZ-FE) (1997)
1. Using a dial indicator, measure the vertical and lateral runout of the companion flange. The maximum runout should measure 0.10 mm (0.0039
inch).
2. Using a dial indicator, measure the ring gear runout. The maximum runout should be 0.10 mm (0.0039 inch), if the runout is greater than the
maximum, replace the ring gear.
3. Using a dial indicator, measure the ring gear backlash. The backlash should not be any more than 0.15 - 0.20 mm (0.0059 - 0.0079 inch). Perform
the measurements at 3 or more positions around the circumference of the ring gear. If the backlash is not within the specification, adjust the side
bearing preload or repair as necessary.
4. Measure the drive pinion preload by performing the following.
a. Using a torque wrench, measure the preload of backlash between the drive pinion and ring gear. The preload (at starting) should be 0.7 - 1.0
Nm (6.1 - 8.7 inch lbs.).
b. Using a torque wrench, measure the preload. The drive pinion preload plus w/o differential lock should be 0.4 - 0.6 Nm (3.5 - 5.2 inch lbs.)
and with a differential lock the total preload (at starting) should be 0.3 - 0.7 Nm (2.6 - 6.1 inch lbs.).If necessary, disassemble and inspect the
differential.
5. Using a dial indicator, measure the side gear backlash with holding one pinion gear toward the case. The backlash should measure 0.02 - 0.20 mm
(0.0008 - 0.0079 inch). If the backlash is not within the specification, install the correct thrust washers.
6. Check the tooth contact between ring gear and drive pinion.
