Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1.
Ensure front wheels are straight-ahead.
2.
Disarm SRS as outlined under Air Bag System Disarming and Arming.
3.
Removal air bag module as outlined under Air Bag Module, Service and Repair.
4.
Disconnect connector and remove steering wheel set nut.
5.
Place alignment marks on steering wheel and steering shaft for use during installation.
6.
Remove steering wheel with suitable puller tool.
7.
Remove steering column covers.
8.
On MR2 models, remove instrument panel No. 1 lower finish panel and insert.
9.
On all models, remove combination switch.
10.
Remove mounting screws and spiral cable from combination switch.
INSTALLATION

1.
Ensure front wheel are in straight-ahead position.
2.
Install spiral cable
3.
Turn spiral cable counterclockwise by hand until cable becomes difficult to turn.
4.
On Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Land Cruiser, Previa, Supra, Tacoma and T100, 1993-94 Tercel, 1993-95 Celica and Paseo, and 1996
4Runner models, turn spiral cable clockwise approximately three turns to align red mark, Fig. 55. Spiral cable will rotate about three turns either
left or right of center.
5.
On MR2, RAV4, 1995-96 Tercel, and 1996 Paseo models, turn spiral cable clockwise approximately two and one-half turns to align red mark,

6.
On all models, install combination switch.
7.
On MR2 models, install instrument panel No. 1 lower finish panel and insert.
8.
On all models, install steering column covers.
9.
Align steering wheel and steering shaft marks, then install steering wheel mounting nut and tighten to specifications.
10.
Install air bag module as outlined under Air Bag Module, Service and Repair.
11.
Arm SRS system as outlined under Air Bag System Disarming and Arming.
