Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Service and Repair
Engine Compartment Fan

Fan Motor, Replace

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable.

2.

Disconnect fan electrical connector.

3.

Remove 3 attaching bolts, then the spacers and cooling fan.

4.

Remove attaching nut, then separate fan blade from motor.

5.

Remove three screws, then separate fan motor shroud.

6.

Reverse procedure to assemble and install.

Troubleshooting

1.

If coolant temperature is low (below 147°F on 1985-86 models, or 129°F on all except 1985-86 models), proceed as follows:

a. Turn ignition switch on and ensure cooling fan is not operating.
b. If fan is operating, a faulty fan relay and/or temperature switch is indicated. Check for separated electrical connectors or severed wire

between relay and temperature switch.

c. Disconnect temperature switch wire, then check that fan rotates.
d. If fan does not rotate, check fan relay, fan motor, ignition relay and fuse. Check for short circuit between fan relay and temperature switch.
e. Connect temperature switch wire.

If coolant temperature is high (above 176°F on 1985-86 models, or 158°F on except 1985-86 models), proceed as follows:

a. Raise engine temperature to above 176°F on 1985-86 models, or 158°F on except 1985-86 models, then check that fan rotates.
b. If fan does not rotate, replace temperature switch.

Component Inspection

1.

Check resistance to temperature sensor, located at cylinder head rear plate. On 1985-86 models, resistance should be more than 380 ohms at
temperatures below 147°F or less than 300 ohms at temperatures above 176°F. On except 1985-86 models, resistance should be more than 600
ohms at temperatures below 129°F or less than 415 ohms at temperatures above 158°F.

Check engine main relay, located in No. 2 junction block of front engine compartment, as follows:

a. Check that continuity exists between terminals 1 and 2, Fig. 4, using a suitable ohmmeter.
b. Check that continuity exists between terminals 3 and 5.
c. No continuity should exist between terminals 3 and 4.
d. If continuity checks are not as specified, replace relay.

3.

Check main relay operation as follows:
