Axle Shaft: Service and Repair
Installation

    On models equipped with 4A-GE engine, proceed as follows: 

1.

Install outside axle shaft in axle hub, then align pins and install inboard end of axle shaft on transaxle side gear. Install attaching nuts. Do not
tighten at this time.

2.

While depressing brake pedal, torque axle shaft-to-side gear attaching nuts to 27 ft. lbs.

3.

Install suspension arm to rear axle carrier, then the attaching nut. Torque attaching nut to 36 ft. lbs. and install cotter pin.

4.

Install lower arm to rear axle carrier, then the attaching bolts. Torque attaching bolts to 83 ft. lbs.

5.

While depressing brake pedal, torque bearing locknut to 137 ft. lbs., then install locknut cap and cotter pin.

    On models equipped with 4A-GZE engine, proceed as follows: 

1.

Install side gear shaft. Ensure a new snap ring is securely installed in groove of side gear shaft.

2.

Using a suitable brass bar and hammer, drive in side gear shaft until it makes contact with the pinion shaft.

3.

Check installation of side gear shaft. Ensure that there is approximately .08-.12 inch play in axial direction. Ensure side gear shaft will not come
out by trying to pull it completely out by hand. Push side gear shaft to the differential and measure distance between side gear shaft and transaxle
case. Ensure distance between the two is the same as the measurement taken before removing the side gear shaft.

4.

Pack suitable grease into side gear shaft. Use grease from kit. Pack .09-.12 lb. into shaft.

5.

Install rear driveshaft. Install outboard joint side of driveshaft to the axle hub. Push rear axle carrier toward the outside of the vehicle. Remove
bag, boots, nuts and washers from inboard joint. Place new gasket onto the inboard joint. Align marks on the side gear shaft and inboard joint.
Finger tighten the attaching bolts and the three washers holding the driveshaft to the side gear shaft.

6.

Install suspension arm. Install lower arm to rear axle carrier. Tighten inboard joint attaching nuts. Torque attaching nuts to 48 ft. lbs. Install
bearing locknut, locknut cap and cotter pin. Torque bearing locknut while depressing brake pedal to 137 ft. lbs.
