Injection Pump: Adjustments

1.
Remove injector pump head bolt and mount tool 09275-54010 along with suitable dial indicator on pump head plug, Fig. 1.
2.
Manually rotate crankshaft clockwise until either No. 1 or No. 4 piston is 45 degrees BTDC on compression stroke for 2L and 2L-T engines or
25-30 degrees BTDC on compression stroke for 1C, 1C-T and 2C-T engines.
3.
Rotate cold start lever counterclockwise and insert a 0.33-0.39 inch thick metal plate between lever and plunger, then release lever.
4.
Zero dial indicator, then rotate engine until No. 1 or No. 4 piston is at TDC.
5.
Read plunger stroke on dial indicator and compare reading with value specified for injector pump timing.
6.
If stroke is not within specifications (see below), loosen injector pump mounting bolts and union bolts securing fuel lines to pump.
7.
If plunger stroke is less than specified, tilt pump toward engine; if stroke is greater than specified, tilt pump away from engine.
8.
Tighten injector pump mounting bolts and ensure that plunger stroke is still within specifications.
9.
Tighten fuel line connections at pump and remove dial indicator along with service tool and plate from cold start lever, if installed.
10.
Bleed air by loosening fuel lines at injectors and operating starter motor, then start engine and check system for leaks.
NOTE: For alignment of the "Pump Drive Pulley", refer to Engine/Timing Components/Timing Belt/Service and Repair.
INJECTION TIMING SPECIFICATIONS:
1.
4-1839cc injection timing is at TDC with .031 inch (.80mm) plunger lift.
2.
4-2446cc (Corolla model) injection timing is at TDC with .031 inch (.80mm) plunger lift.
3.
4-2446cc (Pickup model) injection timing is at TDC with:
a. 2L-T engine, .039 inch (1mm) plunger lift.
b. 2L engine exc. Calif., .045 inch (1.14mm) plunger lift; Calif., .035 inch (.89mm) plunger lift.
4.
4-1974cc injection timing is at TDC with .028 inch (.70mm) plunger lift.
