Disassembly

1.

Remove pitman arm using a suitable puller, Figs. 1 and 2.

2.

Remove sector shaft adjusting screw locknut.

3.

Remove end cover attaching bolts, then remove end cover and sector shaft. Drain oil from gear housing.

4.

Loosen worm bearing adjusting screw locknut using suitable tool.

5.

Using suitable tool, remove worm bearing adjusting screw from gear housing.

6.

Remove worm assembly with bearing from gear housing. Do not disassemble ball nut from worm assembly. If found to be defective, replace
the entire assembly.

Assembly & Adjustment

Apply grease to oil seal lips and a light coat of grease or gear oil to bearing and sliding surfaces before assembling.

Install worm and assemble adjusting screw and locknut, Fig. 1.

2.

Using suitable tool, tighten adjusting screw within turning range of steering worm and allow bearings to seat.

3.

Loosen adjusting screw and adjust bearing preload by gradually tightening adjusting screw until preload value is 2.6-4.3 inch lbs.

4.

Tighten locknuts.

5.

Recheck worm bearing preload to ensure adjustment has not changed.

6.

Position ball nut at center, then insert sector shaft so that sector shaft gear will center mesh with worm.

7.

Install adjusting screw, gasket and end cover.

8.

Adjust overall preload by turning in sector shaft adjusting screw. Preload should be 6.9-9.1 inch lbs. Perform measurement with gear at center
position.

9.

Check sector shaft to ensure there is no backlash within 100° of either side of center.

10.

Measure backlash by installing pitman arm and check arm deflection at arm end with a dial indicator. After making measurement tighten adjusting
screw locknut.

11.

Align marks on pitman arm and sector shaft, then tighten attaching nut.
