Axle Shaft Assembly, Constant Velocity Type

Axle Shaft Installation

1.

Apply molybdenum disulphide lithium base grease to outboard joint shaft, then insert it into steering knuckle and side gear shaft. Install 6 retaining
nuts, Fig. 14.

Install spacer and snap ring to outboard joint shaft.

3.

Install free wheeling hub as follows: 

a. Place new gasket on front axle hub.
b. Install hub body with 6 cone washers and nuts, then torque attaching nuts to 23 ft. lbs.
c. Install hub bolt with washer, then torque to 13 ft. lbs.
d. Apply a suitable grease to inner hub splines, then place control handle in "Free" position.
e. Install new gasket on cover, then install cover on body with follower pawl tabs aligned with non-toothed portions of body.
f.

Install cover attaching bolts and torque to 7 ft. lbs.

4.

Install automatic locking hub as follows: 

a. Position new gasket on axle hub, then apply suitable multipurpose grease to automatic locking hub splines.
b. Align spring ends of brake assembly in hub with hub flange alignment pins.
c. Ensure locking hub outer cam stopper is securely in inner cam groove, then position inner cam protrusion so it is centered between outer cam

protrusions and aligned with hub alignment pin holes.

d. Install locking hub to axle hub ensuring inner cam protrusion is set between ends of hub brake spring.
e. Install 6 cone washers and nuts and torque nuts to 23 ft. lbs. If hub does not fit perfectly on axle hub, remove and reinstall.
f.

Install axle bolt with washer, then torque to 13 ft. lbs.

g. Install cover, then insert attaching bolts and torque to 7 ft. lbs.

5.

On models less locking hubs, install hubs as follows: 

a. Position new gasket on axle hub, then install hub flange on axle.
b. Install cone washers and attaching nuts. Torque attaching nuts to 23 ft. lbs.
c. Install washer and bolt in driveshaft. Torque to 13 ft. lbs.
d. Install grease cap on hub flange.

6.

While an assistant depresses brake pedal, torque side gear shaft to drive shaft attaching nuts to 61 ft. lbs. on Pickup & 4-Runner models, or 50 ft.
lbs. on Van w/4 wheel drive models.
