Control Arm: Service and Repair

PICKUP & 4RUNNER W/2 WHEEL DRIVE

1.

Raise and support vehicle.

Remove torsion bar boots, then place alignment mark across torsion bar, anchor arm and torque arm, Fig. 17.

Remove locknut from torsion bar adjusting bolt and measure height of exposed bolt end. Record this value for reference when adjusting vehicle
height.

Loosen adjusting nut, then remove anchor arm and torsion bar from vehicle.

5.

Disconnect stabilizer bar end from lower suspension arm.

6.

Disconnect strut bar end from lower suspension arm.

7.

Remove shock absorber, refer ``Shock Absorber, Replace.''

8.

Remove bolts securing lower ball joint to lower suspension arm, then separate ball joint from suspension arm.

9.

Remove lower arm shaft nut, torque arm and lower arm shaft from lower arm, then remove lower suspension arm.

10.

To install lower suspension arm, reverse steps 1 through 9 above. To install torsion bar, follow remaining steps below.

If original torsion bar is to be installed, apply suitable grease to splines, then align marks made during removal and install torsion bar. Check to
ensure that adjusting bolt protrusion is equal to value obtained prior to removal of torsion bar.

12.

If new torsion bar is to be installed, position block of wood 7.09-7.87 inches (180-200 mm) under front tire on side of vehicle from which torsion
bar was removed.
